CHARLES CITY - Veryl G. Johnson, 83, Charles City, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 15 at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City with Rev. Dianne Christopher officiating.
Burial was in the Alcock Cemetery, rural Frederika.
Visitation was from 3-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16 at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City and at the church an hour prior to services on Thursday.
Veryl Glen Johnson was born June 19, 1916 in Chickasaw County, the son of John and Clara (Pike) Johnson. He received his education in the rural Chickasaw County schools and on Sept. 21, 1939, he married (Gene) "Jean" Arminta Cheever at Waverly. Veryl farmed, worked at the Oliver Corp. and was an animal caretaker for Salsbury Laboratories for 20 years. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, Royal Neighbors at Bassett and was a part of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He enjoyed farming, fishing and helping people.
Surviving are his wife, Jean, Charles City; a son and his wife, Steve and Kathie Johnson, Houston, TX; two daughters and their husbands, Veryla and Charley Brewer, Bella Vista, AR, Sharon and Jim Zenor, Ames; six grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; two brothers, Everett Johnson, Waterloo, Laurence Johnson, Janesville; a sister, Patricia Zubak, Cedar Falls.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Audrey in her youth.
Memorials may be directed to the guest activities in care of the Activities Director of the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.
