Bert Pickard, Sturdy Old Time Resident, Dies

Funeral services were held at p. m. Monday in Nashua for Albert H. (Bert) Pickard. 92. who died Thursday night at the Cedar Valley hospital. He had been cared for by the Frilze Nursing Home for several months.

Prior to entering the nursing home, Ben had kept house for himself, just a block west of Main street, and was alert and keen. He followed the news closely, and always was ready to maintain a discerning conversation on events. He celebrated his 92nd birthday in December and received more than 100 cards from friends and acquaintances.

Albert Pickard, son of Palmer and Lydia Atwood Pickard, was born December 20. 1867 at Harlan, Ill. DI. As a young man he came to Iowa and on Dec. 20. 1892 he was married to Frances Mae Hall. To this union two sons were born: Leland born in 1898,. passed away in 1899 and Clifford, who now resides in Cedar Falls. For many years they lived on his farm west of Nashua. Later he went to Waterloo where he worked as a painter, and then came back to Nashua where he has resided until his death.

At both Waterloo and Nashua he devoted much of his tine to the Methodist Church of which he was a faithful member. He is survived by his son Clifford and three grandchildren, Robert Pickard, Des Moines; Mary Pickard Smith, Greenridge, Mo., and James Pickard of Lancaster, Pa. There are eight great grand-children. He was preceded in death by his wife In 1948 and by two brothers and two sisters.

In 1934 he married Cora Shannon, who passed away in 1936.

Funeral services were held at the Chenoweth Funeral Home, the Rev. L. George Pimlou officiating and burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. Roger Petersen was soloist. accompanied by Edna Chenoweth.

Casket bearers were Don Shepard, James Dumro, Ed Simpson, Charles Ligget, Homer Lucas and George Fiene.
