LAWLER - Thelma S. Howe, 75, Lawler, died Saturday, Oct. 14,2000 at her home of natural causes.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19 at Immanuel Lutheran Church (Crane Creek), rural Lawler, with Rev. Peter D. Peterson officiating. Verna Orvis was organist and accompanied those in attendance singing "Rock of Ages", "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Jesus Loves Me" .
Burial was in the church cemetery with Tony, Scot and Mitch Howe, Gary, Chris and Rusty Pitz serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers were Brandi Howe, Shelly Clock, Karen Tieskotter and Teri Blaylock.
Visitation was after 3 P.M. Wednesday, Oct. 18 at Conway Funeral Home in New Hampton and also an hour prior to services at the church, Thelma Shirley (Johnson) Howe was born Aug. 16, 1925 at New Hampton, the daughter of Sievert and Martha (Kimball) Johnson. She attended rural school near her home. After her schooling, Thelma worked as a housekeeper and general farmhand for one of the neighbor families. On June 25, 1942, she was united in marriage with Louis LaWayne Howe at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. After their marriage the couple farmed near Lawler, residing in the Lawler area all their married life. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and enjoyed gardening.
Surviving are one daughter, Paulette (Ray) Pitz, Lawler; one son, Louis Jr. (Susan) Howe, Lawler; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Gene Johnson, Waterloo; four sisters, Edith Brummond, New Hampton, Lorraine Bennor and Anna Mae Hurd, Nashua, and Marie Bellinger, Plainfield; numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Louis Sr. on Nov. 19, 1972; one sister, Darlene McDonald.
