NEW HAMPTON - Virgil "Harry" Hackman, 79, died Monday, April 10 at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Hampton of natural causes.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 13 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton with Rev. Carl Schmitt officiating, i Sister Lorraine Loescher was organist and accompanied the St. Joseph Resurrection Choir. Cantor was Mike Carlin. Lector was Dan Conlon.
Casket bearers were David Uhlenhake, Jerome Uhlen-hake, Garry Uhlenhake, Allan Peters, Francis Peters, Don Peters, Terry Wilhelms and Dan Nesteby.
Inurnment will be at a later date at St. Mary's Cemetery in New Hampton.
Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12 at the Conway Funeral Home in New Hampton with a 4:30 p.m. Rosary and a 6:15 p.m. Scripture Service and visitation was also an hour prior to services at the church.
Virgil John Hackman was born Oct. 27, 1920 near St. Lucas, the son of Tony and Anna (Reicks) Hackman. He attended school at St. Luke’s Catholic School in St. Lucas. After his schooling he worked as a farm hand until he entered the U.S. Army on March 30, 1944. He served durine World War II, where he received a Bronze Star on Feb. 27, 1945, a Purple Heart on March 27, 1945, and also the American Legion Silver Star citation. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 9,1945.
After returning home from the service he worked as a farm hand for John Arnhalt Cutsforth and Bill Hill. He then began working road construction for Mark Eischeid and also Reilly Construction until his retirement.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time with children, especially his nieces and nephews. He also loved sports, especially baseball.
Survivors include five sisters, Florence Uhlenhake, Ossian, Lillian Haas, Sublimity, OR, Sally (Virgil) Peters, New Hampton, Alfreda (Charles) Nesteby, Dubuque and Lorraine Wilhelms, Phoenix, AZ; three brothers, Vern (Theda) Hackman, San Diego, CA, Luke Hackman, Waterloo and Robert (Karen) Hackman, Mason City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Louis Hackman; two sisters, Olivia Walker and Theola Hackman; and five nephews, Mike and John Walker, Ronald Nesteby, Dean Peters and Justin
