Carl A. Mulling "J.R.", 69, of New Hampton, died Saturday, June 3, 2006, at the Hospice of North Iowa Inpatient Unit in Mason City from complications of a heart disorder and pancreatic cancer.

Carl was born on June 12, 1936, in Clarksville, to Carl F. and Eva (Wood) Mulling, the first of six children. He attended country school and Nashua High School. He left school during his ninth-grade year to help work the family farm in rural New Hampton. He then worked for his uncles in their tiling business. Later he joined the U.S. Marine Corps.

He married Sharon Jones on June 7, 1957. They had four children, one dying in infancy. They later divorced. He married Joyce Rathbun on June 13, 1964. They had four children, two dying in infancy. They later divorced. Carl retired from Winnebago in Forest City, where he worked for five years. Previously, he farmed, drove a semi, a milk truck, and worked for Oliver Corp. Carl served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps for 11 years. He fought in the Korean conflict on the front lines where he saw much combat. He worked as a mechanic and military policeman during peacetime. Carl had fond and often horrific memories of his military days.

Carl enjoyed fishing, boating, gardening, bonfires, westerns (movies), M.A.S.H., his livestock, his machine shed, working on the farm machinery, mechanical work, being in the fields planting, cultivating and harvesting, and spending time with family and friends. Farming was his greatest love.
