NEW HAMPTON - Walter M. Ovel, 78, of New Hampton, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center, New Hampton.

He was born March 11, 1927, in Dyersville, son of George A. and Emma F. Moorman Ovel. He married Pauline Theis Feb. 3, 1951, in New Haven.

He graduated from Winthrop High School and continued his education at the American Technical College, Chicago. He served in the U.S. Army as a surgical technician during World War II.

Mr. Ovel managed lumber yards in Harvey, N.D., and Durand, Ill., and also was a Weyerhaeuser Lumber salesman. In 1976 he started his own wholesale lumber business, Ovel Forest Products. He worked for more than 50 years in the lumber industry.

Survived by his wife; three sons, Dan (Kim) and Kevin, both of New Hampton, and Jeff (Darce) of Chatfield, Minn.; a daughter, Nancy (Stan) VanWyk of Marshalltown; a daughter-in-law, Janet Ovel of Racine, Wis.; nine grandchildren; a brother, Don (Judy) of Waterloo; and five sisters, Charlotte Backes of Dubuque, Corene Ovel of Chicago, Vernette (Dey) Cowles of Sheboygan, Wis., Gladys (Al) Frey of Grapevine, Texas, and Elenise Jones of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by a son, Randy; and a brother, Ron.

Services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Parish - St. Marys Center, with burial in St. Marys Cemetery, both in New Hampton. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home, New Hampton, was in charge of arrangements.
