Funeral services for Leona Drilling of Cresco were held at noon on Monday, December 2, 1996, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cresco. The Rev. Michael Fitzgerald officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery with Conway Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

She died of natural causes at the Cresco Care Center on Thursday, November 28, 1996, at the age of 95.

Leona Margaret Drilling was born at Ionia, IA, on March 28, 1901, the daughter of Michael and Sophia (Steinmetz) Herold. She attended school in a small town in Minnesota. Her father died and the family returned to Cresco to make their home.

On November 21, 1921, Leona married Ferd Drilling in Cresco.

Leona liked to play the piano and also liked to read.

She is survived by her children: Dorothy Drilling of Waterloo; Eileen Drilling of Red Wing, MN; Lorraine O'Hearn of St. Louis, MO; Alvin Drilling of Des Moines; Robert Drilling of Des Moines; and Lavern Drilling of Minneapolis; 24 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Esther Henkes of Cresco.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son Eugene; her parents; seven brothers, Alfred, Herman, Ben, Arnold, Karl, Victor and Leo Herold; four sisters, Sr. Mary Elizabeth Herold, Mae, Gertrude and Louisa Herold.
