Funeral services for Mary Whitinger, 78, of Prescott Valley, AZ, formerly of Elma and Fredericksburg, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 14, 1996, at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. Interment will be in Howard Cemetery at Elma. The Rev. Roger R. Rethamel will officiate. Conway Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She died on Sunday, November 10, 1996 of natural causes at Phoenix Memorial Hospital.

Mary Ann Whitinger was born June 8, 1918, at Earling, IA, the daughter of George and Mary (Emig) Kohles. The family moved to the Elma area in the early 1920s where Mary attended school.

On July 26, 1940, she married Harvey Nelson. They were later divorced. She married Jake D. Whitinger in 1958.

Mary lived in Elma until moving to Arkansas until the death of her husband. She then lived in Fredericksburg from 1984 to 1996 when she moved to Prescott Valley, AZ, several months ago.

She is survived by one daughter, Sherry Tuttle of Prescott Valley, AZ; one son, Harvey Nelson of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Alfred kohles of Elma; five sisters, Marcella and Stella Wyatt, both of Riceville, Rita Thompson of Riceville, Helen Sullivan of Cresco and Anna Sullivan of Cedar Rapids.

Preceding her in death were both husbands; parents; two sisters, Rose and Lenora Kohles; and one brother Urban Kohles.
