Funeral services for Edward Straw of Lawler were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 28 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating.

The pall was placed by his wife and three children. Interment was in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Tony Schuchhardt, Dave Auschstetter, Kenny Steinlage, Jerry Steinlage, Jason Steinlage, and Brandon Kleve. Honorary pallbearers were: Joe Dagit, Lyle Njus, Jeremy Limburg, Jason Byrne, Larry Hruska, Dewey and Mary Brincks, Pat and Kim Lensing, Gene and Carol Winter. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Edward, 53, died Friday, December 24, 2004 in an automobile accident near Lawler.

Edward J. Straw was born October 14, 1951 in New Hampton, the son of Earl D. and Sarah F (Steadman) Straw. He attended grade school in Lawler and graduated from Turkey Valley High School in 1970. While in school he helped the Njus boys with farming and was active in wrestling where he placed fourth at the 1969 Iowa State Wrestling Tournament. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1970 and served in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1972.

On September 9, 1972, he married Karen Huber at St. John's Nepomucene Catholic Church in Ft. Atkinson. They lived in Kentucky while Ed was in the Army and moved back to Iowa where he worked for John Deere, Kohlmeyers as well as helping local farmers. They owned Straw's DX in Lawler and the last 20 years he worked for Brincks Construction, was a substitute mail carrier and bartended at the Brite Spot, Jackson Heights and the LT Tap.

He enjoyed remodeling his home, cutting wood, camping, canoeing and watching Turkey Valley and Iowa State athletic events.

He is survived by his wife Karen; one son: Craig of Lawler; two daughters, Jennifer Kurtenbach of Lawler and Cynthia Uhlenberg of Fredericksburg; four grandchildren; his mother, Sarah Straw of Lawler; three brothers: Dana of Daly City, CA, David of Littleton, CO; A.J. of Protivin; and five sisters: Karen Huber of Lawler, Vickie Mracek of Protivin, Paula Kout of Lawler, Diane Gebel of Lawler, and Deb Straw of Lawler.

Edward was preceded in death by his father; and one brother: Danny.
