PROTIVIN - Walter J. Schmidt, 74, of Protivin, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at the Cresco Care Center.

He was born March 18, 1931, in Shakopee, Minn., son of Peter Carl and Catherine Sophia Meier Schmidt. He married Bernadette I. Welter on June 9, 1953, at St. Huberts Catholic Church, Chanhassen, Minn., and they later divorced.

Mr. Schmidt served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Ingersol DD652. His entire career of 51 years was spent in the plumbing and heating trade.

Survivors include two sons, Daniel and John (Chris), both of Shakopee; three daughters, Victoria (Kevin) Walton of Belle Plaine, Minn., Ellen (Dale) Sorenson and Carla (Mark) Olson, both of Shakopee; four grandchildren; a sister, Marie (Francis) Bisek of Shakopee; and five brothers, Harold, Dick (Darlene), Robert (Dorothy) and Paul (LaVina), all of Shakopee, and Art of Montgomery, Minn.

Preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Brown and Theresa Lehnen; and four brothers, Al, Anthony and Joseph, and Roman in infancy.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Assumption Catholic Church, Little Turkey, with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Reilly Ridge, rural Lawler. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 605 of Protivin and the Paul Johann Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2069 of Alta Vista. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hugebacks Protivin Funeral Home, where there will be a 6 p.m. Scripture service. Visitation also 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
