NEW HAMPTON - Bernard "Barney" Charles Ball, 80, formerly of New Hampton, died June 15, 2005, at his home in Missoula, Mont., from complications of congestive heart failure and Alzheimers.

He was born Oct. 28, 1924, in New Hampton, son of John and Agnes Shekleton Ball. He married Eileen Roths in 1949. She died in 1993.

Mr. Ball graduated from New Hampton Community High School in 1942. He joined the Air Force in 1942 and trained as a turret gunner on a B-17. He spent 14 months as a U.S. POW 1919, liberated by General Pattons Third Army. In 1949 he and his brother opened a meat market in Lawler, which they operated until 1959 when they opened the Corner Grocery, New Hampton. He owned and operated the store until 1966 when he built a new IGA and later the New Hampton Meat Locker with Merlin Straw. He and his wife moved to Sioux City in 1977 where he retired working for Hy-Vee Grocery.

Survivors include three daughters, Nancy (Barney Jette) of Missoula, Barb (Rick Black) of Grimes and Deb (Dave Heimerdinger) of New Hampton; three sons, Kevin (Idahlia), Larry (Margo Hurrle) and Bryan (Colin Kulow), all of Minneapolis; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by six brothers, Francis, William, John, Vincent, James and Morris; three sisters, Margaret Peters, Ann Diesburg and Helen Rosonke; and a son, Greg.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center, with inurnment and military honors in Calvary Cemetery, all in New Hampton. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until services Monday at the church. Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home, New Hampton, is in charge of arrangements.
