NEW HAMPTON - Donald Bernard Mai Sr., 83, of New Hampton, died Thursday, June 30, 2005 at his home.

He was born Dec. 8, 1921, in Remsen, son of Nic and Florentine Arens Mai. He married Eta Sitzmann May 15, 1945, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Neptune.

He was a 1939 graduate of St. Marys High School in Remsen and served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a sergeant in the Medical Corps during World War II. Mr. Mai farmed north of Remsen for 16 years and later south of New Hampton.

Survived by his wife; six sons, Dean (Jane) of Elma, Chuck (Darlene), Don Jr. (Marilee), Jay (Judy) and Gregg (Lori), all of New Hampton, and Philip (Claudia) of Jacksonville, N.C.; nine daughters, Pam Mai, Pat (Tom) Schwickerath, Lea (Joe) Throndson, Cyndy (Bob) Weiglein and Nyla (Gary) Recker, all of New Hampton, Marlene (Jim) Gaffney of Hiawatha, Joy Tenge of Houston, Texas, and Teresa (Ron) Smith and Jeanne (Larry) Friedrich, both of Elma; 39 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lola Johnson of Westside and Edna Clark of San Clemente, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Mai of Encino, Calif.

Preceded in death by a brother, Glenn Mai.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center, New Hampton, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by New Hampton American Legion and VFW posts. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home, New Hampton, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. Scripture service, and for an hour prior to services at the church.
