Melba Adalaide Gilbert, age 81 of New Hampton, Iowa died Thursday, April 2, 2009, at her home.

Memorial Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating. Music will be provided by Dennis Strum as organist and vocalist.

Family inurnment will take place at the New Hampton City Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren, Rachel Ysbrand, Matt Ysbrand, Jennifer Meyer, Marissa Paulsen, Derek Tjepkes, Drew Paulsen, Alex Paulsen and Leah Tjepkes.

Friends may call 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 6, 2009, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Melba Adalaide Gilbert was born September 12, 1927, in rural Howard County, IA, the daughter of Sjur and Andrena (Johnson) Attleson. She received her education in New Hampton graduating from the New Hampton High School in 1945. After graduation, Melba worked as a clerk for the FBI in Washington, D.C.

On September 20, 1948, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton she married Charles Joseph Gilbert. To this union three daughters were born; Patricia, Kristin and Debra. Charles died in 1957 at the age of 33. She then moved to Waterloo and worked at the former Rath Packing Co. Melba had a long term relationship with Mike Reeves and to this union two daughters were born; Michelle and Julie. Returning to New Hampton, Melba began working for the former United Telephone Company as Chief Operator in 1961 and in 1979 transferred with the company to Fairfield, IA, where she lived and worked for 18 years. In 1996, Melba returned to New Hampton where she worked nearly five years in her semi-retirement for Dr. Dedic DDS.

In her free time Melba enjoyed reading, playing cards, bowling, going to the casinos, bingo and spoiling her grandchildren. She was an active volunteer at the Carnegie Cultural Center, Trinity Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include five daughters, Patricia Gilbert, Kristin (John) Meyer, Debra Gilbert, all of New Hampton, Michelle (Tom) Paulsen of Carroll, IA and Julie (Steve) Tjepkes of Atlantic, IA; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Palmer Attleson of Denver, CO, James Attleson of Lindsborg, KS and Richard (Adriana) Attleson of Mason City, IA; one sister, Paulette Trewin (Jim Hulne) of New Hampton; a brother-in-law, Joe Goss of Lawler.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her long-time friend, Mike Reeves; two sisters, Signora Goss and Karen Feind.
