Downes rites held July 17

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 17, at St Paul's Lutheran Church at Fredericksburg for Leonard George Downes, 69, of McAllen, Texas, who died Saturday, July 14, at McAllen General Hospital of a stroke. Rev. Raymond Poppe officiated at the services and burial was in Graceland Cemetery, New Hampton.

Pallbearers were Lyle Mattke, Everett Drewelow, Earl Drewelow, Ray Wiley, Martin Weidler and Ralph Schutte.

Mr. Downes was born April 4, 1910, at Chicago, Ill, the son of Harry Downes and Elizabeth Ohm Downes. He was united in marriage July 24, 1938, with Loretta Weitenhagen at St Paul's Lutheran Church, Fredericksburg. The couple farmed in Fredericksburg area for many years and retired to McAllen, Tex in 1962. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where, in the past, he had been a church elder and church secretary.

Mr. Downes is survived by: his wife, Loretta; one son, Robert of Fredericksburg; two daughters, Mrs. Lorely Heald, Davenport, and Mrs. Monty (Debra) Roberts of Temple, Texas, and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home of Fredericksburg was in charge of arrangements.
