CLEGHORN, Iowa -- Paul Clifford Polson, 81, of Cleghorn died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at Cherokee Villa Nursing and Rehab Center in Cherokee, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church in Marcus, Iowa. Burial will be in Marcus-Amherst Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Earnest-Rohde Funeral Home in Marcus.

Paul was born April 17, 1925, in Marcus, the son of Gottfrid and Guro (Bly) Polson. He grew up in the Marcus area, graduating from Marcus High School. After high school, he attended college before returning to the Marcus and engaged in farming. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, in the amphibious forces aboard the USS Colbert APA 145 in the South Pacific. He was honor man in his bootcamp company.

He was united in marriage to Avis Backhaus on July 16, 1955, in Cherokee, Iowa. After their marriage, they lived and farmed in the Cleghorn area until their retirement. Avis passed away May 31, 1991. After his wife's death, he continued to live near Cleghorn until entering the Cherokee Villa Nursing and Rehab Center in April 2006.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he served in the church council board and mutual ministry. He was instrumental in helping the Faith Lutheran Church with their new fellowship hall. He also was a member of VASA and the Scandinavian Societies.

Survivors include two sons, Mark Polson of Lawton, Okla., and Bruce Polson and his wife, Teri of New Prague, Minn.; a daughter and her husband, Dawn and Terry Jaminet of Inverness, Fla.; six grandchildren, Aaron Jaminet, Ryan Jaminet, Amanda Polson, Erica Polson, Joshua Polson and Caleb Polson; and two sisters, Margaret J. Polson of Cherokee and Janet Walkup of Tucson, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Avis; two brothers, Loren and Dale Polson; and a sister, Marilyn Smith.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall audio/visual equipment fund.
