CHEROKEE, Iowa -- George W. Nebola, 83, of Cherokee passed away Thursday, June 29, 2006, at Madrid Nursing Home in Madrid, Iowa following a six-week illness.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Church of Christ in Cherokee, with the Rev. Gary Swick officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 10:45 a.m. Monday at the church. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 4 to 6 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.
George was born Aug. 21, 1922, in Leigh, Neb., to Joseph R. and Mary (Schlotzhauer) Nebola. He graduated from Leigh High School in 1940. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He was married to Hope Boone on Dec. 8, 1946, in Cumberland, Iowa. He had farmed for many years, worked at the Cherokee Post Office and drove school bus for the Cherokee Community Schools.
He was a member of First Church of Christ, where he taught Sunday School for many years and helped with the church services at the nursing home. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and sharing those items with his friends.
He is survived by three sons and spouses, Daniel and Kerry Nebola of Grimes, Iowa, Timothy Nebola of Hart, Mich., and Kevin and Colette Nebola of Ankeny, Iowa; four grandchildren, Tammy and Ben Yetter of Des Moines, Lisa and Jeff McDonald of Des Moines, Timothy Nebola Jr. serving in Iraq, and Jesse Nebola of Hart, Mich.; two great-grandchildren, Mackailey and Madison Yetter; several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hope on Dec. 13, 1992; a son, Ronald Nebola; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Nebola; and five brothers.
