SUTHERLAND – Leslie Edward Miles, the son of J. A. and Nellie Tipton Miles, was born Sept. 18, 1904, at Onawa, Ia., and died Nov. 27, 1965, at Cherokee, Ia., at the age of 61 years, two months and nine days.

He attended public school both at Peterson and Paullina. For 42 years he was employed as maintenance foreman for Chicago Northwestern Railroad, living at Paullina and Elmore, Minn., and for the past 21 years at Sutherland.

He was a member of Sutherland Church of Christ, Masonic Lodge No. 347 and a past member of Volunteer Fire Department.

He was united in marriage on June 17, 1939 to Ida Gleason at Elk Point, S. D.

His parents and a granddaughter, Sandra Kay Miles, preceded him in death.

Surviving are his widow, Ida; four children, Mrs. Glen (Phyllis) Fiddelke, Cherokee, Gordon Lee Miles of Mapleton, Pvt. Terry Edward with the U.S. Army and Glenda Jean Miles at home; also, six grandchildren. A brother, Maurice Miles of Boone, and a sister, Mrs. Elmer (Neva) Rohwer of Butterfield, Minn., several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Nov. 30 from Sutherland Church of Christ with clergyman, Wally Farnham and Vernon N. Clark officiating. “Near to the Heart of God” was a hymn played by Mrs. Bernard Watterson, organist.

Burial was in Waterman Cemetery near Sutherland where Masonic rites were conducted by Abiff Lodge No. 347 AF & AM led by Charles Zahren, W. M. Pallbearers were Beryl Brookfield, Bernard Watterson, G. C. Bidwell, Delbert Litka, C. B. Heckert and Marvin Sump. Flowers were arranged by Mrs. Frank Waggoner and Mrs. Lars Jensen. Baumgarten Funeral Service was in charge of all arrangements.
