Evart A. Peterson, 85, died Tuesday Oct. 31 in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 4 from the Memorial Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery. The Boothby Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Peterson was born May 5, 1904 in Wheeler Township, Sac County to Charles A. and Clarissa Mead Peterson. He attended various rural schools in Sac and Buena Vista counties including Providence High School. He graduated from Business College in Des Moines in 1924.

On April 5, 1928 he was married to Birdlyn Fulton at Kelso, Washington. He farmed and traveled for a wholesale company until April of 1929, when he moved to Cherokee and became the Skelly Oil bulk agent. He worked for the Skelly Oil Company until 1964.

He had served as City Clerk in Cherokee from 1964 until 1973. He had made his home in Cherokee since 1929. Peterson served as City Councilman from 1941 until 1955 and as Mayor of Cherokee from 1959 until 1962. He was president of the Cherokee Country Club in 1952 and a member of the Cherokee County fuel, oil and gasoline rationing board during World War II. He was a former member of the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce and for many years was a member of the Sioux Valley Hospital Board of Directors.

Mr. Peterson was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder and had served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was also a member of Speculative Lodge No. 307 A. F. and A.M. for over 60 years.

He is survived by two sons: Tony of Howard, S.D. and Chuck of Cherokee; four grandchildren, one great granddaughter and one sister, Eleanor Rollins, West Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one brother and two sisters. (Source: Former Cherokee County Historical Society scrapbook. Clipping hand dated 11-1-1989)
