Hazel Marie Jacobson, 92, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Monday, January 13, 1997 at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident on Highway 59 north of Cherokee.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 16, at 10:30 a.m. at the Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee. Rev. James Smith will officiate and burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa. Visitation will be today from 10 a.m. t 9 p.m. at the Greenwood Funeral Home, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Mrs. Jacobson was born February 15, 1904 in Cherokee to William and Julia (Venker) Sleezer. Following the death of her mother, she was adopted by William and Mamie Barnes. She attended Wilson High School in Cherokee. She moved to Sioux City where she worked as a housekeeper for the Hotel West for many years. On April 29, 1931, she married Elmer Jacobson in Elk Point, South Dakota. When the Hotel West closed, she worked as a housekeeper at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sioux City until retiring in 1970. She moved to Cherokee in 1977. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star (Sioux City), VFW Auxiliary, Women’s Relief Corps, Rebekahs, and Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Sioux City.

Survivors include two sons: Philip and his wife Cheryll, Cherokee; and Luther, Sioux City; two daughters: Florence and her husband Donald Ganske, of Sedro Woolley, Washington; and Marion Evans, Sioux City; 18 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a half brother, William Sleezer, Beaverton, Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on July7, 1971; two sons: David in 1994; and Charles in 1972; a daughter in infancy; two sisters; a brother; and two half-brothers.
