Dr. Chester R. Johnson, 81, died Tuesday at 9 p.m. in Cherokee following a seven-week illness. His home was at 782 North First.
Born April 24, 1885 in Cherokee County, he attended grade and high school here. He then went to Chicago where he attended Hahneman Medical School, graduating in 1906. Prior to coming to Cherokee in 1914, he practiced at Alta eight years. After being both a physician and surgeon here, he retired in June 1946.
He was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church, American Legion Treptow Post no. 230, L. A. Wescott Post Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 2253, Rotary Club, IOOF Lodge, Knights of Pythias and was a member of Cherokee Country Club since its organization.
He was also a member of Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital Board, Cherokee Public Library Board and was a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He had served in World War I as lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Corps with overseas duty. Dr. Johnson had always held an active interest in civic affairs of the community. He was married to Clara A. Alderson on Jan. 6, 1914.
Surviving are one son, Chester D. Johnson of Minneapolis; four daughters, Mrs. E. W. (Frances) Chapman of Fort Belvoir, Va., Mrs. Pierce (Idella) Green, Cherokee, Mrs. Richard F. (Mary) Barta, Milwaukee, Wis., and Mrs. Donald B. (Edith) Davis, Johnstown, Colo.; also 18 grandchildren. Numerous nephews, nieces and cousins also survive.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Clara, on May 24, 1950; also, his parents, four sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services will be from Memorial Presbyterian Church Friday at 3:30 p.m. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery at Alta. Boothby Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
