Death of Mrs. John Safley

Mrs. John Safley died at her home near Washta Saturday morning, May 4, 1907, aged 57 years, 11 months and 7 days.

Nancy Ritts was born in Elkhart, Ind., and came to Iowa with her parents at the early age of 5 years, settling in Chickasaw county. She was married to Elijah Kirkpatrick Oct. 11, 1866. She moved with her husband to Cherokee county about 25 years ago and lived in this vicinity since.

Mr. Kirkpatrick died about 8 years ago and she was again married Dec 14, 1905, to John Safley, who survives her. She leaves two sons and three daughters as follows: Mrs. Mary Wallace of California; Mrs. Cora Bailey, Clement Kirkpatrick and Jas. Kirkpatrick of Wagner, S.D.; and Mrs. O. Conley of Washta; also five brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Safley was a good woman and made many friends in this community during her long residence here. Many years ago she was converted to Christianity and joined the church. She remained true to her faith and died trusting in Jesus and looking forward with hope.

The funeral was conducted by Rev. E.T. Fegtly at the M.E. Church Sunday morning and was largely attended, many being obliged to stand outside the church. The remains were laid to rest in the Washta cemetery.

The relatives from away who were here at the funeral were: Mrs. Cora Bailey and children and Jas. Kirkpatrick of Wagner, S.D., Mrs. Ellen Kegley, Frank and Walter Kegley and famlies of Kingsley, Mrs. Downing and daughter of Correctionville.

NOTE from Wee: the "Mrs. Downing and daughter" referred to at end of obituary is Nancy's sister, Adeline Rosella [Ritts] Downing, and her youngest daughter, Hazel Downing.
