Merlyn L. “Speck” Olson, 66, of 4353 N. E. Aurora Ave., Des Moines, Iowa passed away Thursday, June 18, 1998 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines of a heart ailment.

Funeral services were held Monday June 22 at the Grandview Park Funeral Home with burial in the Chapel Hill Cemetery, Des Moines.

Mr. Olson was born May 22, 1932 at Cherokee, Iowa to Otto and Hattie (Hoeppner) Olson. He attended schools in Cherokee, graduating from Wilson High School. He worked in the construction business for about eight years before moving to Des Moines. He was a retired bricklayer and a member of Hope Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Paulette; three daughters: Charlotte Shell, Des Moines; and Melody Olson and Jody Stagner, both of Altoona, Iowa; six grandchildren; five sisters; Anita Nelson and Evelyn Scott, both of Cherokee; Luella Cipperly, Holstein, Iowa; Margaret, San Diego, California; and Darlene Milbrodt, Sioux City, Iowa; six brothers: Leonard, Donald, and Francis, all of Cherokee; William, Aurelia, Iowa; Harold, Storm Lake, Iowa; and Virgil, Minneapolis, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and four sisters: Clara Williams, Viola Brownmiller; and two sisters in infancy.
