William R. “Bill” Olson, 72, of Aurelia, died Monday, February 1, in the Marian Health Center in Sioux City, following a short illness. Graveside services will be held on Friday, February 5 at 2 p.m. at the Cherokee Memory Gardens. Rev. Gary Armstrong will officiate. Visitation will be on Thursday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present in the evening from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.

He was born on October 31, 1926 in Cherokee County, Iowa to Otto and Hattie (Hoeppner) Olson. He was married to Betty Dicks on October 14, 1946 at Cherokee. He had owned and operated Bill’s DX Station for seven years and then Bill’s Skelly Station for six years. He then worked for Cherokee County and for the City of Cherokee for a short time.

He had worked for the N.E. Independent School District in San Antonio, Texas for nine years retiring in 1990. He was affiliated with the United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Cherokee Volunteer Fire Department, serving for 10 years. He had been a resident of Aurelia, Iowa the past year and a half. Prior to this he had lived in Clinton, Missouri for four years and San Antonio for eleven years and was originally from Cherokee.

He is survived by his wife Betty; sons Michael and Mary Olson of McAllen, Texas; Steven and Caroline Olson of West Salem, Wisconsin; five grandchildren, Michael R. Olson, Jr., Amanda Olson, Christopher Olson, Justin Olson and Alison Olson; step granddaughter Devin Anderson; five brothers: Leonard and Emily Olson of Cherokee; Harold and Josephine Olson of Storm Lake; Donald Olson of Cherokee; Francis and Patricia Olson of Cherokee; Virgil Olson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; sisters: Anita and George Nelson of Cherokee; Evelyn Scott of Cherokee; Luella Cipperley of Holstein; Margaret and Thomas Patris of San Diego, California; Darlene Milbrodt of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Merlyn Olson; four sisters and a daughter-in-law Kathy (Pigott) Olson.
