MORE THAN HALF CENTURY HERE
Samuel Ramsden Located on Homestead in Pilot Township in Fall of 1867

Another one of the early pioneers of this county went to his great reward Tuesday, Nov. 12, when Samuel Ramsden passed away at Fort Dodge, Iowa, where he and his wife had gone to visit their children.

Mr. Ramsden was born in Yorkshire, England, March 22, 1833, and came to America in 1859, landing here on July 4. He stayed two or three years in Rochester, N.Y., working at his trade of blacksmithing, then came to Clermont, Iowa.
From there he came to Cherokee county with his wife’s father and brothers to look for a location for a home. He returned for his family, his brother-in-law returning to help move the stock. He started from Clermont Oct 29 in wagons with wife and two children, one a babe of six weeks, landing in Cherokee county Nov. 15, 1867, and took a homestead in Pilot Township on which he lived for twenty years. Following that he moved to Cherokee and built a shop, remaining six years. He afterwards moved to a farm in Willow Township and in about twelve years moved to Quimby, where he resided for 5 years and then moved to Cherokee again.

He was an able and faithful member of the Presbyterian Church, a kind husband and father and was beloved by all who knew him, always jovial in joy or sorrow. On Sept. 24, 1864 he was married to Esther Jenness, who still survives him. To this union seven children were born – James Thomas, Frederick Elmer, Homer Wallace and Curtis Blackburn, all of Fort Dodge, and Mrs. William Unger of Cherokee; Charles William who died at the age of 25, and Lydia, who died in infancy. Besides these he leaves seventeen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren to mourn his death.

The funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 14, at the residence, conducted by Rev. A. B. Thutt of the Presbyterian Church and burial took place at Good Hope.
