Marguerite Whiting dies
Mrs. Marguerite Whiting, 74, died Saturday in her sleep at her home in Cherokee.

Funeral services are pending. The body was cremated. The Boothby Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marguerite Stiles was born Nov. 1, 1910, in Cherokee to Nestor and Maude Molyneux Stiles. Her parents were early settlers in Cherokee and she became one of the city's foremost historians, most recently working to find a permanent home for the Cherokee Archives.

She graduated from Cherokee High School and then the University of Wisconsin with a degree in geology. She married Lester Whiting on Nov. 2, 1935, in Cherokee. The couple traveled around the country on various geological expeditions before returning to live in Cherokee in 1965. Mr. Whiting died on March 23, 1982.

Mrs. Whiting was a member of the First Unitarian Church in Sioux City, the Friends of the Library and the Cherokee County Historical Society. She was also on the board of the Grand Meadow Heritage Center and was founder of and archivist for the Cherokee County Archives.

She is survived by one son, Nathan, Brooklyn, N.Y.; one daughter, Mrs. Sarah Oelberg, Storm Lake; one brother, Robert C. "Bud" Stiles, Cherokee; four grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

She was also preceded in death by one brother.
