P.L. Vannatta, Cherokee resident
P.L. Vannatta, 96, died Thursday at Country Side Estates in Cherokee of a lengthy illness.

Services will be Saturday at 2 pm at the First Church of Christ with Don Hensley officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee under the direction of the Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee. A family prayer service will be held at 1:45 pm at the church.

Mr. Vannatta was born Feb 4, 1888 in LeMars. On July 22, 1920, he married Myrtle Gleason. She died June 27, 1947. On Jan 2, 1953 he married Ella Ostert in LeMars. She died in 1965.

He served during World War I with the U.S. Havy. He became a fireman on the Illinois Central Railroad and in 1938 became an engineer, retiring in 1957.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the First Church of Christ and the Brotherhood of Firemen and Local Engineers.

He is survived by four sons, LuVerne and Robert of Cherokee, Clifford of Sioux City and Darrel of LeMars; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Darlene) Patten and Mrs. Harold (Beverly) Heschke, both of Cherokee; 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and six brothers.
