OBITUARY.

Mrs. Mary E. Nelson, generally known as Grandma Nelson, died after about a week’s illness at her home in Cherokee, Saturday morning, Jan. 10, at the ripe age of 79 years, 2 months and 9 days.

Mrs. Nelson was born in the town of Florida, Mass., November, 1811. She was one of a family of twelve children, of whom only two brothers are left, residing in Massachusetts. She was married Dec. 11, 1831. Her husband died three years ago last November, they having spent almost sixty years of happy married life. God blessed the union with seven children, of whom five are now alive. Three of the children live in Cherokee: L.D. Nelson, E. W. Nelson and Mrs. James Brockway; Mrs. Mary Tower lives in North Adams, Mass., and L.L. Nelson in Laclede, Kansas.

The deceased moved from Massachusetts to Iowa twelve years ago and has since resided in Cherokee. She was a member of the Baptist church for forty-two years, the last twelve of which she was a member of the First Baptist church of Cherokee, She was an earnest, consecrated Christian lady. The many years she spent in the Christian life only tended to increase her faith in, and love for, her Master. But her work was done. She said she was ready to go. She came to her grave in full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in season (Job 5:26.)

The funeral services were held at the residence of James Brockway, conducted by Re. J.W. Neyman, assisted by Revs. Stire and Jacobs. The remains were interred in Oak Hill Cemetery.
