Ralph Mongan

Ralph Mongan, 84, of Aurelia died Saturday, Jan 5, 2002 at the Sunset Knoll Retirement Home in Aurelia where he had been a resident for two years. Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan 8, 2002, with Lay Pastor Bruce Rapp officiating. Internment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Aurelia. Military honors by the Grashoff-McManus American Legion Post #390 of Aurelia were performed. Visitation was on Monday from 6:30 0 8 p.m. in the Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia.

Ralph Guy Mongan was born on May 17, 1917, in Aurelia, the son of Charles and Carrie (Hillary) Mongan. Ralph attended school in Aurelia and graduated from the Aurelia High School in 1934. On November 3, 1935 Ralph married Marianne Elizabeth Chandler in Aurelia.

Ralph entered the U.S. Navy on June 6, 1944, and was honorably discharged in January 1946. Marianne died on May 11, 1978. Ralph worked as a plumber in Aurelia and retired in 1979. On Sept. 1, 1979 Ralph married Astrid Nelson. Astrid died on March 10, 1996. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Aurelia, a member of the Grashoff-McManus American Legion Post #390 of Aurelia, the VFW, and the knights of Pythius. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and telling stories.

Survivors include his daughter, Gayle, and her husband Red Brownmiller of Aurelia; one son, Gary, and his wife Keiko Mongan of Warrenton Va.; one stepdaughter, Bonnie and her husband Butch Sleezer of Aurelia; one stepson, Gerald and his wife Helen Johnson of Lynchburg Va.; one step-son-in-law, Robert and his wife Ruth Allen of Aurelia; 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Ralph in death were his parents; his wife, Marrianne; his second wife, Astrid; three brothers, Carroll, Glen and Lawrence Mongan; one sister, Ruth Conley, and one son-in-law, Bob Miller; and one step-daughter Connie Allen.
