Area farmer dies at home in Denison January 24

Irwin Herman Bruhn was born May 16, 1909, the son of Peter and Marie Fick Bruhn. He died January 24, 2000 at his home in Denison at the age of ninety.

Irwin was baptized in Christ September 5, 1909 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa and later confirmed there on April 13, 1924. Irwin received his education in a rural school near his home. On March 6, 1929, he was united in marriage to Bernice Backhaus by Rev. Tirnhaber at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. The couple settled on the Bruhn family farm west of Ricketts, where Irwin farmed. Irwin and Bernice remained on the farm for fifty years.

In 1978, the couple moved to Denison where he
lived until the time of his death.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed his family very much. He always took pride in keeping the farm places looking their best. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and is a past member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak and St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; six brothers, Rudolph, Raymond, Leo, Louis, Herbert and Walter; three sisters, Hattie Hingst, Minnie Eyer and Hilda Brockman; one son-in law, Orville.

He is survived by one daughter, Donna Groth of Battle Creek, Iowa and one son, Larry Bruhn of Denison; four grandchildren, Ronald Groth and his wife, Jacqueline of Metamora, Illinois; Roger Groth and his wife, Phyllis of Battle Creek; Linda Clark and her husband, William of Omaha; Dianne Heuvelmans and her husband, David of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; six great-grandchildren, Robert and Rachel Groth of Metamora, Illinois; Joel, Jerry, David and Dennis Groth, all of Battle Creek; one brother-in-law, Harry Backhaus of Denison; one sister-in-law, Ella Hamann of Battle Creek; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 28, 2000 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated the services and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Organist Karen Kahl provided the accompaniment for the congregational hymns, "Beautiful Savior", "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "I'm But a Stranger Here".

Those serving as pallbearers were Wayne Harmening, Lauren Knutzen, David Bruhn, Curtis Bruhn, Dwayne Lee and Dale Bruhn.

Huebner Funeral Home of Denison handled the arrangements. The family invited everyone in attendance to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid.
