MARCUS, Iowa — Richard Charles Nielsen, 56, of Irvine, Calif., formerly of Marcus, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at his residence on non-small cell lung cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus, with the Rev. James Gruber officiating. Burial will be in Marcus-Amherst Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Earnest and Roethler Funeral Home in Marcus.

Mr. Nielsen was born Aug. 21, 1944, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Charles W. and Thelma (Addy) Nielsen. He was raised in Marcus and graduated from Marcus High School in 1962. In the early 1960s, he was a member of "The Charades," a rock and roll band from Marcus. They performed professionally in the five-state area.

He attended Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif., and the University of South Dakota, where in 1970 he received his bachelor's degree in accounting.

He had been a resident of southern California for 30 years, and was employed as a commercial real estate appraiser. He recently received his certification as a business valuation appraiser.

Survivors include a brother, Chuck of Irvine; two sisters and their husbands, Patricia and Rex Cowan of Dallas, and Susan and Ray Luokkala of Vancouver, Wash.; and a niece and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
