MARCUS. IOWA — Mark J. Carey, 87, of Marcus died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus with the Rev. Roger Henry officiating. Burial will be in Marcus-Amherst Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Earnest and Roethler Funeral Chapel in Marcus.

Mr. Carey was born Dec. 24, 1912 at Marcus, the son of Joseph and Anna (Trienen) Carey. He grew up in the Marcus area, and attended rural school and Holy Name Catholic School.

He married Lucille Anderson on Feb. 15, 1939, at Cherokee, Iowa. The couple farmed for many years north of Marcus, in Marcus Township. They retired in 1975, and moved into town.

After retiring he became an avid golfer and enjoyed working on his lawn and traveling.

He had been a member of the Marcus Township School Board and the Marcus Golf Club.

Survivors include his wife; four sons and their wives: Robert and Nancy of Marion, Iowa, Donald and Sheila of Westminster, Md., John and Esther of Marcus, and Richard and Jane of Tucson, Ariz.; five grandchildren: Chris, Erin, Timothy and Michael Carey, and Stephen Bryant; and a sister, Irene Horton of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by three daughters: Bette and Joan in infancy, and Jane Bryant: three brothers: Raymond, Gerald, and James; and a sister, Florence Gifford.
