MARCUS, Iowa — Lorne Robert "Bob" Sand, 79, of Marcus died Thursday, April 6, 2000, at Heartland Care Center in Marcus.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy
Name Catholic Church in Marcus with the Rev.
Richard Remmes officiating. Burial with military rites by F.I. Goodburn American Legion Post 517 will be at a later date in Holy Name Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with a rosary at 3 p.m., and a Scripture wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Earnest and Roethler Funeral Chapel in Marcus is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sand was born April 27, 1920, on a farm in Cherokee County, Iowa, the son of John and Mae (Carey) Sand. He grew up on the farm and attended school in Marcus. He then farmed with his dad and brothers.

On April 23, 1946, he married Marie Peck at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. They farmed many years northeast of Marcus and moved into town in 1973. He served on the Board of Directors for Sand Seed Service and other family corporations.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a medic with the 5th Army, in the Middle East.

He belonged to Holy Name Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Marcus Golf Club and F.I. Goodburn American Legion Post, and had been a member of Sand Seed Bowling Team.

Survivors include his wife of Marcus; two sons and their wives, Alan and Connie of Cleghorn and Dean and Mary of Sioux Falls; two daughters and their husbands, Beverly and Jim Nielsen and Monica and Tom Mayer all of Marcus; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five sisters, Margaret Bjork of Paullina, Iowa, Evelyn Krause of Midway City, Calif., Bette Horstman of Marcus, Bonnie and her husband Howard Smith of Cherokee and Mary and her husband Dale Bunkers of Granville, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law, Edith Sand of Marcus and Phyllis Moore of Cave Creek, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a step-mother, Irene Sand; and three brothers, Merle, Ray and Paul.
