CHEROKEE,Iowa — Virginia Simonsen, 76, of Cherokee died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Cherokee Villa following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, with a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Quimby, Iowa, with the Rev. John Scherb officiating. Burial will be in Quimby Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Simonsen was born Jan. 2, 1923, in Cherokee, the daughter of Dr. A.J. and Anna (Johns) Tanner. She graduated from Cherokee Wilson High School in 1941 and from Iowa State College in Ames in 1946.

She married Merle W. Simonsen on June 10, 1944, in Cherokee. She had lived in South Bend, Ind., from 1944 to 1945, and then in Quimby from 1946 until moving to Cherokee in 1977. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Quimby United Methodist Church, where she served in the chancel choir, United Methodist Women, Quimby Women's Clue, where she was a past president, Rebekah Lodge, Cherokee County Republican Women, where she was a past president, Daughters of the American Revolution, Cherokee Tone Circle, Sioux Valley Hospital Auxiliary, Sanford Museum Association, Cherokee Flying Club and Iowa Archeological Society. She served on the Quimby Library Board.

She enjoyed traveling and archeology.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters and their husbands, Beverly and Glenn Rowe of Minburn, Iowa, and Sigrid and Theron Parry of Houston; three sons, Soren of Long Beach, Calif., Erik and his wife, Loretta of Tucson, Ariz. and Craig and his wife, Beverly of Aurelia, Iowa; and six grandchildren, Laurie Jenness, Justin and Tanner Rowe, Derek and Cody Simonsen and Marrissa Harrington.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
