21 August 1999QUIMBY, lowa — Cleo Nelson, 73, of Cherokee, Iowa, formerly of Quimby, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, with a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, with the Revs. Jim Steen and Cindy Cone officiating. Burial will be in Quimby Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. today at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Nelson was born May 13, 1926 in Quimby, the daughter of Leonard and Erma (Lickiss) McCannon.
She graduated from Quimby High School in 1943.
She married Everet Nelson on Dec. 27, 1943, in Cherokee. She did housecleaning in the area and was the librarian at Quimby Library for several years. She retired in 1987. She had been a resident of Cherokee Villa Nursing and Rehab Center for over three years.
She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Association and Pilot Rock Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed embroidery and canning.
Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Dennis E. and Connie of Cherokee; a daughter and her husband, JoAnne and Kevin Tapper of Cherokee; four grandchildren, John and Jeff Nelson and Tim and Steve Tapper; three great-grandchildren; and several in-laws, Ralph Mongan of Aurelia, Iowa, Margaret and Gaylord Franken of Daytona Beach, Fla., Garland and Nellie Nelson of Cherokee, Donald and Jackie Nelson of Littleton, Colo., Marcella Nelson of Cherokee and Bob and Mary Nelson of Cherokee.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Melvin "Ike" McCannon; and a sister, Faith Sones.
