Truman Leland Pelton was born in Ashtabula Co,Ohio, Dec. 13, 1863, & passed away at the home of his daughter & son-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Glenn Champion in Cherokee, Iowa, at 1:00 Thursday morning, March 24, 1938, at the age of 74 yrs,3 mths & 11 days.
He was the son of S. G. & Sarah Graham Pelton, & was a member of a family consisting of 6 brothers:viz;
Alvera, Grant,Marshal, Ezra, Rufus & Truman. Four of the brothers having preceded Truman in death, leaving Rufus, who resides in Cherokee, as the only survivor of the family.
In the year 1880, when Trum, as he was familiarly known, was 17, he came with the family to Cherokee Co, Ia & settled in Silver Twp., & has been a continuous resident of the county since that time, covering a period of 58 yrs., & places him among the earlier settlers of the county. He has always been interested in farming operations, & for a period of 3 years, from 1912 to 1915 was a member of the firm of Lawrey Melter & Pelton engaged in the automobile business in Cherokee.
On April 24, 1892, Mr. Pelton was united in marriage to Miss Sadie A. Burke, also from Silver Twp., & to this union were born 4 children, Lester & John & Zerma & Pauline. Lest & Zerma, now Mrs. C.A. Gano, both reside in Sioux City & John & Pauline, now Mrs. Glenn Champion reside in Cherokee. These children were all at the death of their father.
Mr. & Mrs. Pelton made their home through out their wedding life of 46 years on the farm in Silver Twp, but moved to the city of Cherokee in 1909 & resided here for 10 yrs, returned to the farm for another period, & then back to Cherokee where Mr. Pelton passed away.
There are left to mourn the passing of this good man, his wife, Sadie A. with whom he spent 46 years of happy wedded life; his 2 sons & 2 daughters; 3 granddaughters, Jane Eleanor & Betty Claire Champion of Cherokee; & Beth Elaine Gano of Sioux City; together with a number of other relatives & a host of friends & neighbors who will miss him greatly.
Mr. Pelton was a man who always scattered sunshine & good cheer wherever he went, & his friends were numbered by the number of acquaitences of whom he had a large circle. He was a member of Modern Woodmen of America.
Funeral services were held from the Duven Funeral Home, Saturday Afternoon at 2:30, March 26, 1938, conducted by W.O. Dailey, minister of the Curch of Christ in Cherokee, assisted by Mrs. Fredenburg & George B. Mummert, singers , with Mrs. Evelyn Malcom presiding at the piano, rendering 2 selections: Beautiful Isle of Somewhere & Going Down the Valley.
The pall bearers used on the occasion, all old friends of Mr. Pelton, originally from Silver Twp were as follows: J.W. Bunn, George Wilson,Sr., James Campbell,Oscar Stevenson, Homer Whitmare & Charles Bernard. All funeral arrangements were under the direction of Dunver's Funeral Home & burial was made in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee.
