Lieut. James M. Garvin Is Killed In Action In European War Theater
Had Taken Part In Many Flights Past Few MonthsMr. and Mrs. M. A. Garvin of Marcus were notified last week of the death of their son, Lieut. James M. Garvin, somewhere in Europe. The following telegram was received from the War Department:
“Report received from the German Government through the International Red Cross, states that your son, Second Lieutenant James M. Garvin, who was previously reported missing in action, was killed in action November 29, 1943, in the European area. The Secretary of War extends his deep sympathy—Ulio Adjutant General.”
Second Lieutenant Garvin volunteered for service in the Army, in November, 1940. He served eight months in the Coast Artillery, transferring to Army Air Corps in February of 1941, where he served as a link trainer at Luke Field, Phoenix, Ariz. He then began training as an aviation cadet at Santa Ana, California, continuing at LeMoore and Sequoia Field. He received his wings and commission at Williams Field, Arizona, on March 10, 1943. He arrived in England the first part of September where he had completed several escort missions and fighter sweeps.
The Lighting pilot had taken part in the heavy air blows on Wilhelmshaven, Muenster, and two on Bremen. In addition to flying duties, he capably performed squadron supply and administrative functions.
Lieutenant Garvin was born in Marcus twenty-eight years ago and graduated from Holy Name school in 1933.
He leaves to mourn, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Garvin, two sisters and two brothers, Gordon Garvin and Mildred Frank of Remsen, Vincent Garvin of Marcus and Catherine Dalpes of Phoenix, Arizona.
A memorial mass will be held at the Holy Name Church in Marcus, Rev. L. J. McEvoy officiating, Wednesday morning, March 29, at 10 o’clock. Military honors will be accorded by members of the F. I. Goodburn Post, American Legion.
