PHELPS

Mr. Benjamin Phelps, father of C. S. Phelps, died today at noon. He was a very old man, being in his 91st year. Though, of course, feeble, he was not nearly so much so as would be expected of a person of his age. About four years ago his eyesight failed, but his general health, taking into consideration his years, remained good. During the last week or two it was plain to the family that he was failing, though it could not be seen that he was suffering with any distinct disease. He had been able to go about the house as usual until a day or two ago. Yesterday he was unable to take his food, and those about him realized that he could not live many days more. At noon one of the family went into his room, and at once perceived that he was dying. He quietly and peacefully passed away a few moments later.

The deceased was a native of Vermont. He was a soldier in the war of 1812, serving from the beginning to the end of that struggle. He moved to Wisconsin in 1842, and when that part of the country was changed from a territory, assisted in forming the first state government. He came from Wisconsin to this place about four years ago. (Aurelia Sentinel, 9-23-1886)
