Sheryl Kay Messerole

Sheryl Kay Messerole, 66, of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa and formerly of Cherokee, Iowa died Monday April 27, 2009 at the St. Lukes Regional Medical Center, Sioux City, Iowa following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday May 1, 2009 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Armand Bertrand and Rev. James Smith will officiate. Burial will be in the Maryhill Cemetery, rural Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will be on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 6:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. Sheryl was born to Faye and Ora (Young) Pettengill on January 3, 1943 in Cherokee, Iowa. She attended school in Cherokee, Iowa and graduated from Washington High School. Sheryl married Robert Messerole at Maryhill Church on June 18, 1960. Four children were born to their union: Joel, Noel, Jonna, and Melissa. Sheryl worked at Earl May Garden Center in Cherokee, Iowa before owning and operating Ace's Hamburger Shop. She was the Director of Religious Studies at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee for several years. Robert and Sheryl retired in Roach, Missouri in 1996 before moving to Sgt. Bluff, IA in 2004 to be closer to family.

Sheryl was a loving mother and grandmother. She was a very gracious and generous host, having most family holidays and get-togethers at her home for many years. She had a great sense of humor and was a joy to be around. She was loved by everyone.

Sheryl is survived by her husband, Robert, of Sgt. Bluff, Iowa; four children, Joel Messerole, of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Noel and Amy Messerole, of Smithfield, Virginia; Jonna Galvin, of Sgt. Bluff, IA; and Melissa and Patrick Schmitz, of Camdonton, Missouri; 11 grandchildren, 5 great grand children, 3 sisters: Deloras Gunnarson of Ankeny, IA; Donna Schmidt of Cherokee, IA; Bonnie Harwood of Sioux City, IA; a brother Don Pettengill of Cresco, IA; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Faye and Ora Pettengill; two sisters, Shirley Jean Pettengill and Virginia Beachum of California.
