DOROTHY C. HANSEN
(August 31, 1921 - April 5, 2009)

DOROTHY CATHERINE HANSEN, 87, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away, Sunday, April 5, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 9th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Larry Lemke will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the Church on Thursday. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. On line condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com

Dorothy was born August 31, 1921, in Erwin, South Dakota, the daughter of Richard and Christina (Thomsen) Broders. She attended rural school in Danbury, Iowa, and high schools in Danbury and Battle Creek. She attended Buena Vista College and taught in rural schools. Dorothy married Lowell Hansen on June 5, 1944. They resided in Bryan, Texas, until Lowell left the military service. They returned to Iowa and made their home in Sac City for 20 years and then moved to Cherokee in 1965. She furthered her education and substitute taught in the elementary grades in Cherokee. She later was a clerk for the Cherokee Stationary for several years. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, the Women’s Missionary League and taught Sunday School for many years. She also served on the Braille Committee.

One of her greatest joys of her life was her family. Dorothy truly enjoyed making many chocolate chip cookies for family and friends. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles and playing cards with neighbors and keeping up with her families and grandchildren’s activities.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lowell on September 4, 1999, a grandson Dallas Hansen, brothers George and Richard Broders and brothers-in-law Lyle Hansen, Rodney Hansen, Fred Griesse, and one sister-in-law Jacqueline Hansen.

She is survived by her children: Michael (Debra) Hansen of Colleyville, Texas; Marsha (Derril) Olson of Lincoln, Nebraska; Paula (Lowell) Smith of Cherokee, Iowa; Bradley Hansen of Des Moines, Iowa; her grandchildren: Dustin Hansen of Rosenburg, Texas; Nedra and Gabriel Hampton of Lincoln, Nebraska; Jacob Olson and friend Melissa Zephier of Lincoln, Nebraska; Tiffany and Jason Rupp of Lenexa, Kansas; Zachary Smith and friend ReNae Patterson of Cherokee, Iowa; Cassy Smith and friend Bryan Hultman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and one great grandchild Gavin Hampton of Lincoln, Nebraska; one sister Arlene Griesse of Escondido, California; sisters-in-law Barbara Broders of Schaller, Iowa; Wilma Hansen of Holstein, Iowa; Norma Hansen of Omaha, Nebraska; a brother-in-law Sterling Hansen and special friend Roland Ramin of Sioux City, Iowa; many nephews, nieces and cousins.
