Richard J. Cedar, 80, of Larrabee, Iowa, died Friday April 3, 2009 at his home following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held Monday April 6, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Leroy Riemer will officiate. Burial will be in the Liberty Cemetery, rural Meriden, Iowa. Graveside military honors will be conducted by L.A. Wescott Post #2253, Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will be on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. Richard was born on June 11, 1928 in Herndon, Kansas to David and Anna (Holmdahl) Cedar. His family moved to Meriden, Iowa in 1939 and he graduated from Meriden High School in 1946. He proudly served his country in the Korean War. Richard started out working for Farmers Hy-Bred North in Cherokee, Iowa. On September 10, 1955 he married Arlene Kirchoff in Marcus, Iowa. Richard was a Standard Oil Agent for 35 years and started Cedar Chemical in 1969.

Richard was a wonderful father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family and working with his sons. Richard enjoyed watching sports, gardening, and constructing puzzles. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion Post, and the Trinity Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene; three sons, Lance Cedar of Cherokee, IA; Kevin Cedar of Larrabee, IA; Randy Cedar and his wife, Karin, of Cherokee, IA; a daughter, Lori Ganger and her husband, Charles “Dude”, of Cherokee, IA; grandchildren, Ann Wolterman and her husband, Cory; Alecia Rapp and her husband, Adam; Kate Ganger and Charlie Ganger IV, Jessica Cedar; great grandchildren, Emma and Caleb Wolterman and Madison and Noah Rapp; his mother-in-law, Grace Kirchoff; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Maynard and Leonard; a sister, Ruby Wester; a sister-in-law, Alice Cedar; a brother-in-law, Vernon Wester; a father-in-law, Lester Kirchoff.
