ALICE L. CEDAR
(April 27, 1932 - January 27, 2009)

ALICE L. CEDAR, 76, of Cherokee, Iowa and former Aurelia, Iowa resident passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 27, 2009, in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 31st, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee. Pastor Larry Nilson will officiate. Burial will be in the Liberty Cemetery at rural Meriden, Iowa. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Saturday. Visitation will be on Friday from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. with the family present from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Alice was born April 27, 1932 on the family farm north of Cleghorn, Iowa to Lester and Grace (Gilbert) Kirchoff. She was baptized at the Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Marcus, Iowa and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus, Iowa. She graduated from Cleghorn High school in 1950. She was married to Leonard Cedar on March 5, 1955 at Marcus, Iowa. Alice had lived in Cherokee since 2003, prior to this in Aurelia for many years and also on various farms in Cherokee County. She had worked at the Cleghorn State Bank from 1950 until 1955 and at the Swanson’s Warehouse in Cherokee for several years. She was a Nurse’s Aide at Sunset Knoll Retirement Home in Aurelia for 20 years. She was affiliated with the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She was a member of the United Federated Women’s Club, the Red Hat Society, various Church circles and a Birthday Club.

She was preceded in death by her father Lester Kirchoff, her husband Leonard on May 12, 2003, and two brothers-in-law Vernon Wester and Maynard Cedar.

She is survived by her four children: Allan Cedar of Aurelia, Ia.; Cheryl Peterson and her husband Kurt of Aurelia, Ia.; Brian Cedar of Cherokee, Ia.; Julia Cedar and her special friend Steve Wharton of Cherokee, Ia.; 12 grandchildren: Josh Cedar and his wife Kristin of Cherokee, Ia.; Nick Cedar of Abbyville, La.; Cody Cedar and his special friend Katie Lockwood of Aurelia, Ia;; Justin Peterson and his wife Debbie of Aurelia, Ia.; Kolin Peterson and his special friend Emily Sonksen of Cedar Falls, Ia.; Paige & Adam Cedar of Cherokee, Ia.; Anna, Ashley, Evan, Christopher & Cara Wharton of Cherokee; one great granddaughter Maeryn Cedar; her mother Grace Kirchoff of Cherokee, Ia.; one sister Arlene Cedar and her husband Richard of Larrabee, Ia.; one brother Virgil Kirchoff of Waterloo, Il.; a sister-in-law Ruby Wester of Marcus, Ia.; two aunts: Dorothy Clow and her husband Bud of Cherokee, Ia. and Ida Ohlendorf of Taylorsville, NC.; also several nieces and nephews.
