George G. Wilkie

George G. Wilkie, 89, of Cherokee, Iowa died Friday January 16, 2009 in the Country Side Estates Nursing Home, Cherokee, Iowa following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday January 20, 2009 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Armand Bertrand will officiate. Burial will be in the Cedar Township Cemetery, rural Larrabee, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. and a rosary by the Knights of Columbus immediately following at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. George was born on November 3, 1919 in Larrabee, Iowa to Alfred G. and Annie (Grayson) Wilkie. He attended Larrabee High School and graduated in 1938. While in high school, George pitched for the school baseball team and also played on the Larrabee Town Team. In 1941 George entered the United States Air Force and was a mechanic instructor during World War II. On November 23, 1948 he married Patricia Campbell in Templeton, Iowa. George and Pat had three children together, Fred, Tom, and Bill, whom preceded George in death. George farmed all of his life in the Larrabee area.

George was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He also liked to play in two-ball golf tournaments with his wife, Pat. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. George was a 4-H leader at one time and he was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Pat; two grandsons, Kyle Wilkie and his wife, Kelly, of Cherokee, IA; Curtis Wilkie of Cherokee, IA; great grandchildren, Bryer, Bailey, and Britney; a brother, Bob Wilkie and his wife, Donna, of Cherokee, IA; a daughter-in-law, Carol Wilkie of Cherokee, IA; a sister-in-law, Lucille Wilkie of Cherokee, IA; a brother-in-law, Tom Campbell and his wife, Tomeline, of Ione, CA; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Clarence Wilkie and his wife, Lillian; Ross Wilkie; Frank Wilkie; his sons, Fred, Tom, and Bill.
