Elaine J. Smith, 88, of Cherokee, Iowa died Sunday January 18, 2009 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center, Cherokee, Iowa following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday January 23, 2009 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Armand Bertrand will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. Elaine was born on September 30, 1920 in rural Larrabee, Iowa to Vern and Theresa (Collister) Alexander. She graduated from Larrabee High School in 1937. She then attended Business School in Sioux City, Iowa. On April 6, 1942 she married Dale Smith in Cherokee, Iowa. He preceded her in death. Elaine worked at the Cherokee State Bank as a teller and also worked at the ASCS office. She was a 4-H Leader and also clerked at the Cherokee Sale Barn. Elaine enjoyed craft building at the Cherokee County Fair. She liked baking and canning, playing the piano, and gardening.

She is survived by three sons, Jim Smith and his friend, Polly Angstead, of Scotland, SD; Jerry Smith and his wife, Linda, of Cherokee, IA; Doug Smith and his wife, Judy, of Cherokee, IA; a brother, Lorne Alexander and his wife, Norma, of Sutherland, IA; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dale; a daughter, Patricia Kniss (1979); a brother, Neil Alexander (2007).
