Richard R. Tolzin, 88, of Cherokee, Iowa died Saturday November 29, 2008 at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center, Cherokee, Iowa following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday December 3, 2008 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Cherokee, Iowa. Reverend Richard Arndt will officiate. Burial will be in the Cherokee Memory Gardens Cemetery, Cherokee, Iowa. Military Graveside Honors will be provided by the Cherokee V.F.W. L.A. Wescott Post #2253. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 1:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. Richard was born October 7, 1920 in rural Galva, Iowa to William and Elizabeth (Peters) Tolzin. He was raised in the Hanover and Aurelia area. He entered the United States Air Force after his schooling and was discharged due to disability. On January 3, 1943 he married Dorothy Reinert. She preceded him in death on October 3, 1981. Richard was engaged in farming all of his adult life and worked for the ASCS for many years. On November 24, 1984 he married Freda Admire. Richard was a God fearing and dedicated man. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Richard was confirmed on May 26, 1935 at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aurelia, Iowa. He was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee where he served on the board of trustees and was also an elder. Richard was an active member of the Lions Club and also a member of the Quimby American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Freda; a daughter, Connie Nelson and her husband, Dennis, of Cherokee, IA; a step son, Doug Admire and his wife, Barb, of Lake Park, IA; grandchildren, Jeff Nelson and his wife, Cinda, and their children Mack and Brit of Reedsburg, WI; John Nelson and his wife, Tracy, and their children Ben, Ella, Corey Meyer, and Kim Meyer of Iowa City, IA; step-grandchildren Kaleb Admire of Cedar Falls, IA; Kate Romig and her husband, Nate, of Cedar Rapids, IA; Kim Jacobus and her husband, Justin, and their child Jaiden of Cedar Rapids, IA; a sister-in-law Monica Tolzin of Aurelia, IA; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, sisters Alice Heimsoth, Ethel Breyfogle, Fern Geuther, and Ruby Tolzin; brothers Willis Tolzin and Ralph Tolzin.
