Funeral services for former Cherokee resident Scott David Van Roekel 43, of Spirit Lake, were held on July 26, 2008, at Good News Community Church in Okoboji, with Rev. John Messer officiating. Interment was in Lakeview Gardens in Spirit Lake. Turner Funeral Home of Spirit Lake, Iowa was in charge of arrangements.

Scott David Van Roekel was born March 7, 1965 in Honolulu, Hawaii, the son of David and Carol (Roetman) Van Roekel. He was raised and educated in Cherokee, graduating from Cherokee Washington High School in 1983.

Scott loved being a father and being in the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and gardening. He had a great sense of humor, and was known by everyone for his great "one-liners." He was also a skilled carpenter; most recently, he was a custom cabinet maker in Arizona.

Scott passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at his home in Spirit Lake at forty-three years of age.

He is survived by his parents, David and Carol Van Roekel of Spirit Lake; two sons, Nicholas Brooks of Latimer and Hunter Van Roekel of Two Rivers, Wis.; a brother, Steven Van Roekel and his wife Carrie and their children Katherine and Elizabeth, of Seattle, Wash.; and a sister, Susan Brooks and her children Nathan, Sarah and Matthew of Spirit Lake; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
