Former Larrabee resident Bernard P. Strahmann died Sunday, June 15, 2008 in Shreveport, La. He was 72 years old.

A memorial service was held on June 20, at Mt. Redoubt Church in Nikiski, Alaska.

Bernard was born June 20, 1935 in Larrabee, to Mary and William Strahmann. He left Iowa at the age of 16 and explored the Western states. He made Alaska his home in 1968.

He loved to work in his garden and once won the community Yard of the Month around the log home he and his family built themselves. He was an avid reader, who especially loved westerns. Bernie also loved to tell stories, as well as travel. He was a founding member of the Elks and Eagle Lodges and a member of the Moose Lodge. But most of all he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother William of Larrabee; and son, Eddie Strahmann.

Bernie is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Nina Strahmann; sons, Vince Strahmann, Art Edelen, Rob Edelen and Shane Derflinger; daughter, Cindy Strahmann; five grandsons, nine granddaughters, and two great-granddaughters; surviving siblings are Tom Strahmann of Cherokee, Gerald Strahmann of Cheyenne, Wyo., Jean Brennen of Sioux City and Margaret Nazaryk of Denver, Colo.

At the suggestion of Bernie's family, memorial donations may be made to the Bernard Strahmann Scholarship Fund for Kenai Alternative High School at USA Federal Credit Union PO Box 1253, Kenai AK 99611.
