Elry "Al" Loebig, 72, of Cherokee, died on July 6, 2008 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center, following a courageous fight with cancer.

Memorial services were held Monday July 14, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, with Rev. Armand Bertrand officiating. Burial was in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Wesley, Iowa.

Al was born on April 19, 1936 on a farm near Hancock County to Victor and Viola (Doughan) Loebig. He graduated from Britt High School in 1954, and following his education worked for the State Highway Department for three years, until he enrolled at Iowa State University. Al graduated from ISU in 1963 with a degree in Civil Engineering, and started his career as a professional engineer , and then as a land surveyor. In 1966, he moved to Cherokee to work as the resident construction engineer for the Highway Department. In 1970, he moved to Hampton, to become the Franklin County Engineer.

From 1974 until 1987, he owned and operated House-Loebig Enterprises in Hampton, and moved back to Cherokee in 1987 to become the county engineer , holding that position until 1994.

In 1992, Al opened Northwest Iowa Realty with Jack Foresman, and sold the business in 2000. In 1995, he also bought and operated L & H Engineers, where he did surveying. He retired in 2006 from this business.

Al enjoyed spending his winters in Sun City, Ariz. and playing golf there. He also liked to garden and watch baseball, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Al was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, and St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Sun City, Ariz. Al was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, of which he was a fourth degree knight.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Steve (2003), and two brothers, Merle and John.

He is survived by his special friend, Barb Sundberg, of Cherokee, and her son Brett Sundberg of Sioux Falls, S.D.; his former wife, Dorothy Loebig of Dallas, Texas; three sons, Michael Loebig and his wife, Vicki, of Texarkana, Ariz.; Larry Loebig of Dallas, Texas; David Loebig of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a daughter, Suzanne Potratz and her husband, David, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; grandchildren, James Loebig, Amy Loebig, Jennifer Medina, Brittany Loebig, Kyle Loebig, Joshua Sullenger, Casey Reid, Kayla Potratz, and David Potratz; four sisters, Rita Rasmussen of Olathe, Kan.; Sister Mary Jo Loebig of Eldridge; Ellen McManus and her husband, Ed, of Chicago, Ill.; Kay Cook and her husband, Larry, of Arnolds Park; ten great-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.
