(March 11, 1921 - May 22, 2008)

CELA MAE RHOADS, 87, of Cherokee, Iowa became ill suddenly and passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, May 22, 2008 at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 28th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Jim Steen will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the Church on Wednesday. Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 27th from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. On line condolences may be sent to www.boothbyfuneral.com. Mae was born March 11, 1921 in Hartley, Iowa to Earl and Rose (Geiger) Leonard. She attended Cherokee Public Schools. She was married to Walter “Bud” Rhoads on May 6, 1939 in Cherokee, Iowa. The Rhoads family started the family greenhouse business in 1927. Mae and Bud operated the family business Rhoadside Greenhouse with their son Dale Rhoads until their retirement in June of 2003. She had been a resident of Cherokee her entire life. She was a long time member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Mae entered Careage Hills in June of 2006 to be with Bud.

She was preceded in death by her husband on February 7, 2007, and a son Dale Rhoads on August 5, 2001 and seven brothers and sisters.

She is survived by a son James Carl Rhoads of Des Moines, Iowa, who was born on their May 6, 1946 anniversary; a granddaughter: Dr. Nicolle Gunter and her husband Vincent of Kansas City, Missouri; one great granddaughter Brooke Gunter; a daughter-in-law: Lynn Rhoads of Cherokee, Iowa; 2 sisters-in-law and 1 brother-in-law: Margaret Rhoads of Cherokee, Iowa; Dorothy Gano of Cherokee, Iowa; Stanley Rhoads of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a special nephew Jim Gano of Cherokee, Iowa; and the families of her 7 brothers and sisters many of which live in the Cherokee area.
