Marcella “Sally” Phillips

Marcella “Sally” Phillips, 83, of Cherokee, Iowa, died Thursday, May 15, 2008 in the Countryside Estates, Cherokee, Iowa, following a brief illness.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday May 19, 2008 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cherokee, Iowa. Rev. Armand Bertrand will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation will be 5:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Sunday with a scripture service at 7:00 P.M at Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa. Marcella Rose LaPlante was born November 26, 1924 in Sioux City, Iowa to Treff and Mabel (Dougherty) LaPlante. She attended school in Sioux City, Iowa, graduating from Cathedral High School in 1942. She worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. for several years. On April 10, 1944 she married Kirk E. Phillips in Dyersburg, Tennessee. They moved to Cherokee, Iowa in 1958. Kirk preceded her in death on June 9, 1994.She worked as a bookkeeper and paymaster for many yeas in the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital, Cherokee, Iowa.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and also the Ladies Guild. She was a member of the Happy Hookers Crochet Club, several bridge clubs and 500 clubs. Sally was precinct election official for many years serving in ward 1. She also taught C.C.D. classes at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for over 20 years. She enjoyed working with and for young people. Her family was the most important thing in her life.

She is survived by a son, Gary Phillips and his wife, LaVonne, of Estherville, Iowa; a daughter, Marci Brown and her husband, Rod, of Cherokee, Iowa; grandchildren, Terry Woltman of Seattle, Washington; Hillary Brown-Horstmann and her fiance, Kyle Kruse, of Waterloo, Iowa; Melanie Metzger and her husband, Howard, and their children, Trent and Jacob, of Estherville, Iowa; step-grandchildren, Eric and Heidi Lotz; a sister-in-law Helen La Plante of Mexico Beach, Florida; two nieces and eight nephews; her Saturday bridge foursome and many good friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kirk, three brothers, Albert, Lee, and Robert La Plante; one sister Dorothy Basta; a brother-in-law, Rudy Basta; a daughter-in-law Linda Phillips; a sister-in-law Ola La Plante; two nephews and three nieces.
