Friday, May 23, 2008Laverne R. "Jake" Alberts, 77, of Cherokee, died Monday May 19, 2008 at his home, following a lengthy illness.
Services were held May 22 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee., with Pastor Richard Arndt officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee, and military graveside honors were conducted by V.F.W. L.A. Wescott Post # 2253.
Laverne was born on Dec. 18, 1930 in Harris, to Dick and Phoebe (Graves) Alberts. He graduated from Ocheyedan High School, where he played basketball and baseball for the Ocheyedan Mounders. On Oct. 30, 1954 he married Ella Rahbusch in Sioux City and the couple had six children.
Jake worked at the Hartley Creamery and Wilson Foods, and later owned and operated "Jake and Ella's" in Cherokee and also managed the V.F.W. Club. After retiring, Jake worked part-time at the Brightside Lounge in Cherokee. Jake coached and umpired Little League baseball in his earlier years. He loved playing cards, visiting with people, and especially spending time with his children and grandchildren. Jake was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Jake was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ella in 1986, a son Terry in 2006; a daughter Tamela; brothers LeRoy and Lester; and sisters Velma, Rosella and Ester.
He is survived by two sons, Rick Alberts and his wife, Kim, of Booneville, Mo. and Timothy Alberts and his fiancé, Lilly, of Cherokee; two daughters, Rhonda Peterson and her husband, Jon, of Cherokee and Lori Alberts of Newport News, Va.; two brothers, Raymond Alberts of Kansas City, Mo. and Eugene Alberts of Roger, Ark.; a sister, Dorothy Hicks of Gaza;and nine grandchildren.
